The state is home to one of the oldest living cultures in the  world, with a history that dates back over 2,000 years.  The capital city, Chennai, is a major metropolitan hub and an important cultural and economic  center. Known for its beautiful beaches, such as Marina Beach, Chennai is also a gateway to Tamil  Nadu's traditional arts, dance, and music. The city hosts the famous Chennai Music Season, a  month-long celebration of Carnatic music, one of the oldest forms of classical music in India.  Tamil Nadu is home to some of the most iconic temples in India, particularly the Brihadeeswarar  Temple in Thanjavur, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Meenakshi Amman Temple in  Madurai, renowned for its stunning Dravidian architecture and intricately carved gopurams (temple  towers).

The state’s temples play an important role in the religious and cultural life of its people.  Tamil Nadu is known for its classical dance form, Bharatanatyam, which is characterized by  intricate footwork, hand gestures, and facial expressions. Carnatic music and Kathakali dance are  other important cultural traditions in the state.  The cuisine of Tamil Nadu is flavorful and diverse, with a focus on rice, lentils, and a variety of  spices. Idli, Dosa, Sambar, and Rasam are popular dishes in the state. Chettinad cuisine, known  for its aromatic and spicy flavors, is another highlight of Tamil Nadu’s culinary heritage.  The state is also known for its picturesque hill stations such as Ooty, Kodaikanal, and  Coimbatore, which offer a cool climate and lush greenery, making them popular summer retreats.  Tamil Nadu’s wildlife sanctuaries, like Mudumalai National Park and Indira Gandhi Wildlife  Sanctuary, are home to a variety of species, including elephants and tigers
